Overview and Scope

This Privacy Policy governs your use of the GradeCraft software application (“Application”) that was created by the Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan (“U-M” or “We”). The Application includes tools for instructors to create and submit announcements, describe and collect student work for assessment, provide feedback on that work, and communicate student progress toward different achievement levels. The Application also includes tools for students to submit assignments, make predictions about their own achievement levels on individual assignments, receive feedback on their work, and track progress toward different achievement levels. Additionally, the Application provides aggregate statistics about student assignment submissions and achievements for instructors, and when enabled, for students.

The scope of this Privacy Policy is limited to the collection practices and anticipated uses for your information as contemplated by the Application’s creators as well as the actual uses for University of Michigan users. Other institutions that have adopted the Application may use or share your information in unique ways that are not represented in this Privacy Policy. For additional information related to the use or sharing of information the Application has collected, please contact your institution directly or review any supplemental privacy policies offered by your institution.

The Information We Collect

User-Provided Information — The Application collects and stores the information you provide when you create an account in the Application at and other hosting sites (“Sites”), which may also be accessed via links provided through your institution's Learning Management System (LMS). Registration with us is mandatory in order to be able to use the basic features of the Application. When you register with us and use the Application, you generally provide:

Automatically Collected Information — In addition, the Application may collect certain information automatically, such as the type of device you use, the IP address of your device, your operating system, the type of Internet browsers you use, location data or sites used to access/leave each page, and information about the way you use the Application, including your digital interactions with the Application and the date, time, and length of your visits. This information may be collected through the use of cookies and web beacons and is automatically stored in log files each time you visit our Sites and log into the Application. This automatically-collected data may be linked to personally identifiable information. How Your Information Is Used

U-M only uses student data collected through the Application to enhance the Application’s performance and user experience and for other legitimate educational interests or as required by law. U-M does not sell or rent your personal information.

Unless there is a separate research agreement with your institution with appropriate safeguards in place, U-M does not include data from students who are not enrolled at U-M as part of its research, although we may use to it evaluate platform success and inform iteration.

U-M will use information collected through the Sites to monitor website performance, make improvements to site navigation and content, and better market to prospective students and other audiences.

How Your Information is Secured

We are concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our Application. Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches. We maintain the Application and its associated data in ways that comply with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and U-M FERPA policies.

Data Retention Policy, Managing Your Information

We will retain User-Provided Information for as long as you use the Application and for a reasonable time thereafter. If you’d like us to delete User-Provided Information that you have provided via the Application, please contact us at and we will respond in a reasonable time. Please note that some or all of the User-Provided Information may be required in order for the Application to function properly, and we may be required to retain certain information by law.


We do not use the Application to knowingly market to children under the age of 13. If a parent or guardian believes that the data about his or her child is incorrect, he or she should contact the instructor who is employing the Application in their teaching.


This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. You are advised to consult this Privacy Policy regularly for any changes. The last revision date is posted at the top of this Privacy Policy.

Your Consent

By using the Services, you are consenting to U-M and its partners to process User Provided and Automatically Collected information as set forth in this Privacy Policy now and as amended. "Processing,” means using or touching information in any way, including, but not limited to, collecting, storing, deleting, using, combining and disclosing information, all of which activities will take place in the United States. If you reside outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to the U.S. where it will be processed and stored under U.S. privacy standards. By using the Application and providing information to us, you consent to such transfer to, and processing in, the US.
